Moving within a city

Movers normally charge this on an hourly rate. The hourly rate begins at the time the truck leaves the warehouse until it returns after the move. The size of truck and the number of crew depends on the size of your home and the access for the truck. The more prepared you are on move day, the less time the move will take.

Moving over 244 km (150 miles)

This is based on the weight of your shipment and the distance to your new home. The more you can declutter before the move, the less it will cost to move.

Try to avoid the end of the month in the summer months as this is the busiest time for movers. Book your move as far in advance as possible as professional movers book up fast.

Take the time to contact the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) to ensure the mover is a member in good standing. CAM only accepts members who are credible and professional, are financially stable, have proper equipment and warehouses.

In addition, look at the mover’s Google rating to ensure they provide quality service and to see if they have resolved any service issues.

Moving within a city:

Having furniture items dissembled before the movers arrive will save you money. The movers can do this this but remember you are paying them on an hourly basis.

Moving over 244 km (150 miles):

The driver and crew will disassemble furniture items and re-assemble them at your new home. This is part of the long-distance/cross-country move cost.

Your professional mover can pack these items for you for a nominal fee. If you pack items yourself, buy reinforced cartons from your mover for delicate and fragile items. Wrap the items first in paper, then wrap them in bubble wrap. Put a layer of cushioning at the bottom of the carton and all around the items.

Pack a box of essentials and take this with you in the car. Incudes anything you will need until move day:

· Toiletries/cosmetics

· Kettle/coffee maker

· Paper plates/utensils/cups

· Tea/coffee/sugar/mugs

· Snacks

· Water

· Valuables – paperwork/money/valuable jewellery
